What were the names for the north what was the country of the south called during civil war2/22/2024 Incidentally, despite Magellan calling it (functionally) the Pacific Ocean, that name didn't fully stick until a couple centuries later, with some mappers calling it "The Sea of Magellan" until then. The first known European name for it was Mar Del Sur - South Sea - given by Balboa, who was exploring modern-day Panama, from which the ocean is to the south. He gave it that name because he apparently had helpful winds to get him across it after the rather rough passage around the southern tip of South America. Pacific Ocean The modern name of the Pacific Ocean comes from Ferdinand Magellan, who called it Mar Pacífico - Peaceful Sea. Other Europeans would later call the ocean portion the "Sea of India." An Italian name was Oceano Orientali "The Eastern Ocean," which could be considered distinct from "The Sea of India" (now the Arabian Sea). This name encompassed both the Red Sea (for which the name is still used) and the entire Indian Ocean. Indian Ocean The Greeks called the Indian Ocean Ἐρυθράς Θαλάσσης - The Erythraean Sea (now "Eritrean Sea"). While I sadly only can provide a couple of names used by European cultures, hopefully these are of interest. Many of the names used specifically meant only parts of what we now call a unified ocean, while sometimes a term would mean multiple things we now divide in to two or more parts. One caveat to such things is that while the names were different, so too were the things those names referred to. Instructions and advice on how to best do an AMA.
